How To Compose A Compare And Contrast Essay Introduction: Tips And Examples

A compare and contrast essay is a discussion of the similarities and differences between two subjects. The introduction is perhaps the most important part of the essay as it establishes what the essay is about, namely the topic or subject area and then sets a theme for what you will be discussing about your topic. In order to compose a brilliant compare and contrast essay introduction, follow the following tips and examples.

  1. Plan Ahead
  2. Before solving any problem, your approach should always boil down to this: you have to know what the problem is to be able to solve it. The same is true for a compare and contrast essay or any essay for that matter.

The best way to plan for any writing is to draw up an outline. Begin by figuring out the two issues, people or things, which you would like to discuss. Then think of the various ways in which they differ. Note these down as points to discuss. Then think of the ways the topics are similar. Note these points down too.

Once you have enough material noted down, decide how long the essay is going to be and what the division of the paragraphs would be. This is where you decide the exact structure of the essay based on the research material you have gathered and how you plan to argue it.

  3. Write the Introduction
  4. Once you have the above decisions made, start writing the introduction. You need to start strongly to be able to hold your reader’s attention. A good way to begin is by asking a question. You will ask a question that will draw the reader in and then you will make arguments and counter arguments to finally answer that question later in the essay. We can illustrate the difference here with an example.

Try not to start with a sentence like: “In this paper I am going to compare and contrast an elephant and a mammoth”. Instead you can phrase it like this: “Ever wonder why elephants look so similar to the exhibits of the woolly mammoth at the Natural History museum?” A sentence like that can lead into your thesis statement or even be part of it.

The length of your introduction is also important. Introduce all the different aspects you will talk about in the following paragraphs in the order in which they will appear in the body of the essay. While doing that, make sure you are concise and keep the introduction enjoyable and readable.
