How Do You Start An Explanatory Essay: A Professional Writing Guide

An explanatory essay is also known as an expository essay. An explanatory paper presents a certain event or viewpoint of a situation. It doesn't argue a point, it just presents facts and clarifies the event. If something about the situation is difficult to understand, it's your job to explain it and a clear and premise way that the reader can understand.

  • It might take a little push for you to start writing, but the sooner you start, the better. All you need is a topic. Whether you have been assigned a topic or you can choose one for yourself, you should do as much research as you can. You want to be fully informed on the event and any information that will be pertinent to your essay.
  • While conducting your research, take notes. You can mark pages in books that you might need to go back to or cite any sources you will want for your essay. That will make it easier for you to return to the information after you've found what you're looking for.
  • A good way to begin is to create an outline or start a draft of your essay. An outline should give you a brief summary of your introduction, your main body and your conclusion. That way, you know exactly where and how to begin. This will lessen your chances of having writer's block.
  • Write out your thoughts and ideas for the essay. You can start by asking questions and then answering them. If that works for you then you can flesh out those statements and reword them for your final paper. You can write down the main points of your essay and write your paper around those points.
  • Have all of your research in front of you and decide where is the best place to begin. If that doesn't help, then you can simply start writing. All papers have an introduction, so that will get you started. You should present your subject and what you're is going to cover. Your introduction should also include a thesis statement.
  • The main thing to remember is that you have to be able to explain something that may be confusing to the readers, so your language needs to be clear and concise.
  • The beginning is the least complicated part, so once you start writing, the rest should come easier. Let that be your motivation!
